Ocean Isle Beach, NC

A Truly Flourishing City

When the Intracoastal Waterway was constructed in the mid-1930s, Ocean Isle Beach became a manmade barrier island that was accessible only by boat. Odell Williamson began purchasing parts of the island in the late 1940s, and soon built a four-car ferry that operated on the east end of the island. Unfortunately, in 1954, Hurricane Hazel destroyed the few island homes that existed on Ocean Isle Beach; however, the island survived and prospered under Williamson’s guidance and with the confidence of the townspeople.

The American Shore and Beach Preservation Association named Ocean Isle Beach a winner of the 2008 Best Restored Beach Awards because of its determined history, which shines through the family-friendly atmosphere that the island exudes today.
